Get to know Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is Argentina's capital on the Río de la Plata, shaped by its port and successive waves of immigration. Its barrios give a visit different settings: San Telmo has a historic centre and tango venues, Palermo has extensive parks, and Puerto Madero combines waterfront housing, business and restaurants. Rather than trying to cover every district at once, start with the experience that interests you: a guided introduction, an evening performance or a day beyond the city.
A city tour can give context before you return to individual places. A tango show puts the focus on dancers and music, while a meat tasting makes dinner the main event. For an active outing, a guided bike ride is another way to spend time outside. Our things to do guide connects the neighbourhoods with their individual visitor pages. For a dedicated vehicle and guide, explore private tours in Buenos Aires.

Choose an evening around tango or food
A tango evening can mean show admission alone or a package that includes dinner. The theatre-style ticket featured here adds drinks and a three-course meal only with the corresponding option; transportation is extra. Decide whether you want to eat at the venue or keep dinner separate before comparing the total evening. Our tango shows guide also explains how a seated performance differs from going to a milonga to dance.
The nine-course Argentine meat tasting is a different choice: two hours centred on the meal, with still and sparkling water and a welcome cocktail included. Further alcoholic drinks and soft drinks cost extra, as does transport. For a walking experience with tastings instead of a seated menu, use the food tours guide. Treat the format as part of the decision, particularly if your day already involves plenty of walking.
Barrios, buildings and a day outside the city
La Boca's Caminito is a street-museum setting with coloured façades and paving. San Telmo's covered market sells food and antiques, while its Sunday antiques fair is a separate outdoor event on Plaza Dorrego. Recoleta adds historic architecture and its cemetery, a place to visit respectfully. A theatre visit at Teatro Colón is another focused stop; a guided building visit and an evening performance are different tickets.
For a change of setting, consider a guided Tigre Delta outing with a boat ride. The featured small-group option includes a guide, while hotel transport and snacks depend on the package. The estancia day is a longer choice with lunch, live entertainment and hotel pickup in the specified city districts; drinks cost extra. Compare the day-trip destinations before allocating your full day. The bike option stays with a four-hour north or south city route, a bilingual guide, cruiser bike and helmet.

Money and payments
Local prices use Argentine pesos, abbreviated ARS. A dollar sign on a local menu can refer to pesos, so look for the currency rather than reading every amount as US dollars. Tour cards use USD, which makes them a different price reference from local transport and venue tariffs. Card conversion and fees depend on the payment arrangement and your issuer.
SUBE is used on participating buses, trains and the Subte. The Subte also has additional card and QR payment methods; that does not make every foreign wallet interchangeable. Read the money and transport payments guide before choosing how to pay. On arrival, distinguish Ezeiza from Aeroparque and use the airport guide for onward travel.
Safety and practical planning
Consult current government travel advice for Argentina when planning personal safety, including advice concerning La Boca beyond Caminito. Use those live notices for decisions close to departure, rather than treating a neighbourhood description as a safety assessment. Leave room in your schedule to change an outdoor plan and keep the journey back to your accommodation in mind.
Choose your accommodation area by your interests: parks in Palermo, the historic setting of San Telmo, architecture in Recoleta or the waterfront setting of Puerto Madero. Our where to stay guide explains those differences. For outdoor days, use the climate information as a planning aid and consult a current forecast separately.
Questions about visiting Buenos Aires
Is VisitBuenosAires.org part of Buenos Aires Ciudad or Turismo BA?
VisitBuenosAires.org is an independent guide. It is not operated by Buenos Aires Ciudad or Turismo BA and does not represent the city government.
Should I choose a show or a milonga?
Choose a seated show to watch dancers and musicians. A milonga is a social dance event, sometimes with lessons. The purpose of the evening is different, so decide whether watching or dancing is your priority.
Can I combine the city with an excursion?
A city visit and a separate delta or estancia day give different experiences. Compare the transport, meal inclusions and time required rather than treating every excursion as an interchangeable half day.
